World School Basketball Championships 2023 | Roll of Honour

The World School Basketball Championships returned in style as the event took place at the stunning L’Alqueria del Basket in Valencia last weekend.

With 26 teams from 11 countries taking part over three days in U16 Boys, U16 Girls and U19 Boys categories, the competition’s first outing in Valencia was a huge success with more nations represented than ever before.

On a sunny weekend in Spain, things got underway on Friday evening with the event’s opening ceremony and curtain raiser matches taking place on the venue’s show court – which is used as a training base for Valencia Basket’s men’s and women’s first team squads.

The stands of L’Alqueria del Basket were packed as players, coaches and spectators cheered on their schools who were paraded onto the court with the national flag of their countries.

There was a special appearance by World School Games Event Series official mascot Atlas the Eagle before Dubai International Academy, ACS International School Cobham, CD Esclavas and British International School Cairo took centre stage in the opening games of the competition.

Over the next two days all three age groups produced some incredible basketball across the event’s five indoor courts. With rebounds, three pointers, and dunks galore the standard was set for those schools with one eye on silverware on Sunday afternoon.

With the event cameras streaming matches from the show court, players had the chance to impress in front of the watching audience of family and friends back home. You can rewatch all three days of action on the live stream by clicking here.

After an intense full card of pool matches on Saturday, Sunday was finals day with schools vying for position ahead of the knockout stages.

All three gold medal matches took place on the show court, with some thrilling battles between six excellent basketball teams treating the onlooking spectators to a fantastic conclusion to the event.

In the U16 girls final, Dubai International Academy (UAE) edged out hot favourites and reigning girls champions, British International School Cairo (Egypt) 27-22 in an intense game which went right to the wire. The DIA girls were overwhelmed with excitement as the buzzer sounded, with many of them flooding onto the court to celebrate with their teammates.

The U16 boys also offered up an absolute treat with a two-point game as Dubai International Academy (UAE) delivered the cup double with a 35-33 win over ACS International School Cobham (England). Both teams were an absolute credit to their schools with excellent sportsmanship shown throughout the competition and the Cougars very unlucky not to return home with the trophy.

In a fiercely competitive U19 Boys category, where a number of teams could feel aggrieved to have missed out on the chance of gold, ICS Amman (Jordan) took on Dubai College (UAE) in the final after both teams showed excellent consistency throughout the pool stage.

A two-point game when the two sides met in the first pool match, with ICS Amman coming out on top 19-17, it was always likely this final would go right to the wire and so it proved as ICS Amman came through 21-19 winners in a match which looked like it could have gone either way.
